Sport and physical activity is a valued and accepted part of our school's curriculum, contributing to the development of the whole child. It provides a vehicle for social, physical, emotional and moral learning and is an important expression of our culture.

Sport has always been an integral part of our school, and we are very proud of our great history and success.

Here at Hornsby, we provide extensive opportunities for students to get involved in sport - catering for every individual.

Students are given the opportunity to try out for a Grade Sport team for the winter and summer seasons. Hornsby HS currently competes in the North Western Metropolitan Boys Zone. Students can trial for grade teams and represent the school in sports such as Basketball, Cricket, Water Polo, Football, Rugby, Tennis, Table Tennis, Badminton, Volleyball, Lawn Bowls, Oztag and Futsal.

For 2026, girls are able to trial and play in a mixed team. Acceptance into a grade team is dependent on students being committed to the sport, paying compulsory grade sport levies and being good ambassadors for the school whilst out in public.

Recreational sport is a great option for students who do not wish to compete in inter-school sport. Recreational sport options include Waitara PCYC court sports, Hornsby 24/7 Gym, Walking, Lawn Bowls and Tennis.

Outside of our weekly sport, we also enter teams in many New South Wales Combined High School State-wide Competitions, as well as other external competitions run by various sporting governing bodies. This includes, but is not limited to Football, Baseball, AFL, Rugby League, Futsal, Touch Football and Basketball.

Students also have the opportunity to attend selection trials for Sydney North and NSWCHS representative teams in all sports.

Hornsby High School runs Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics carnivals annually where students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of events. Successful students can also follow the representative pathway in these sports, being potentially selected to compete at Zone, Sydney North, NSWCHS, NSW All Schools and School Sport Australia levels.

All weekly sport occurs on Wednesday afternoons.
